The week has come again that we may call: Nutritional Therapy Awareness Week!
This time last year I tried to work on some ideas for this, I had no idea what to do or how to approach this whole thing. How do you raise awareness for something (nearly) everyone does every day? How do you get the message out there that: your life is in your hands in regards of what you put in your mouth and how these choices are going to affect you? How these foods (or non-foods, because a lot of things we eat can’t really be called food anymore) will balance or disrupt your blood-sugar and therefore your energy, your mood, your hormones? How these choices may have a long-term ripple effect on your health in years to come? How can you support certain (read: all) systems in your body by feeding yourself the right way? And how can food make you feel and look on top of the world?
How do I get the people around me to realise that: Hey! What you shovel in your face might help you feel like a superhuman, or may turn you into a terrible-humoured cow? Food is a delicate situation, especially if you take traditions in consideration (what do you mean: crisp-sandwiches aren’t a staple food?) But I am glad that more and more people are starting to aknowledge that food might be the solution to some of their issues..
I, for example have learned first-hand that:
Eating the right foods (which means: not starving yourself) can help you lose weight (4 stone, give or take, in my case)
Food is like magic! It can make you feel amazing, revived, lift your mood or destroy it.
A healthy balance between eating ‘good’ and treating yourself. And you know what: there is a whole world out there of tasty treats that actually can be called healthy!
Healthy eating can be a lot of fun! So far I have shocked a friend with a courgette-brownie, created the most beautiful healthier versions of some classic dishes and my plate never looks boring!
So, going back to what we, as nutritional therapists, do and how we approach our cases. Nutritional Therapy is as the name says it: complimentary, but science based. We use science as we approach the body as a whole, rather than just focussing on one symptom, as our organs often work together. We don’t just look at the food that is eaten, but also at lifestyle factors that might influence our health and make suggestions to use our lifestyle to our advantage. Which means that we focus on what foods to eat to make us feel better and create a sustainable and healthy relationship with food. With the information we get from our client in an initial consultation, we build a personalized food plan for our clients, with supplement suggestions if we feel the need and easy recipes to get started.
